Vajra Devi 2019

Stone color and gold on Cotton-canvas (Permanent collectionTianyu healing community, China)

24 13/16 " x 16 1/8" I 63cm X 41cm

Vajra-Devi, a member of the yogini family, is depicted here with precise attention to the flexible anatomy characteristic of these spiritual figures. The pronounced fire motifs enveloping the deity emphasize her warm yet formidable nature. The inclusion of tutelary deities Mahakala and Khadga-pani at the bottom of the paubha visually lowers the center of mass, providing compositional stability, while Aparmita is placement in the upper left reflects the artist’s signature off-center compositional style.

This paubha exemplifies the artist’s distinctive fusion of ancient Mathura stylistic elements with subtle Gandharan realism, creating a work that is uniquely their own. The intricate detailing of jewelry, bone ornaments, and strings of pearls that adorn the deities are executed with remarkable precision, further underscoring the artist’s original aesthetic and technical mastery.
