Mahākāla 2020

Stone color and gold on Cotton-canvas (Permanent Collection Himalayan Art Gallery, China)

44 1/16 " x 33 1/16" I 112cm X 84Cm

This large-scale paubha painting of Mahakala, completed in 2021, stands as one of the few monumental works undertaken by the artist. The creation process spanned over 15 months, reflecting meticulous attention to detail and profound dedication.

The central figure of six-armed Mahakala is dynamically surrounded on all sides by his previous manifestations as well as tutelary and assistive deities, demonstrating both compositional complexity and iconographic richness. The work exemplifies the artist’s meditative discipline and sustained engagement with the traditional paubha style.

Throughout the painting, the artist skillfully fuses classical techniques of shading and brushwork with elements of realism, particularly evident in the lifelike depictions of horses and bears. This deliberate stylistic integration highlights the artist’s innovative approach to the paubha tradition.

This exceptional masterpiece received wider recognition through its feature on ICONs, a cultural television program broadcast by CGTN in China, further affirming its significance within contemporary Buddhist art.
