Heruka Sambhara 2022

Stone color and gold on Cotton-canvas (Private Collection, Japan)

12 5/8 " x 22 1/16" I 56cm X 32Cm

This work depicts Heruka (Chakra Sambhara), a central figure in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism, traditionally shown at the center of the Chakra Sambhara Mandala. In this composition, I reinterpret the deity as a single, off-center figure, creating visual tension that is balanced by supporting elements such as cloud motifs, the Kalpa tree, and the presence of Samantabhadra in the upper left.

The contrasting palette—deep blue for the deity’s complexion and vibrant vermilion— establishes a dynamic yet harmonious color relationship. Gold-accented flame motifs guide the viewer’s eye and enhance the spiritual presence of the figure. The detailed depiction of pearl and bone ornaments introduces dimensionality and movement, contributing to a sense of rhythm and vitality.

This piece merges traditional iconography with formal innovation, reflecting artist’s interest in expanding the visual language of paubha painting while honoring its devotional roots.
